Lenard

u may not agree but it's realistic art that modifies our imagination ..........

like if you are good at drawing realistic figure and know well about their shapes and constructions u will know how to draw something uneven or abstract because you'll know what is not realistic .......... so u will be more proffesional and perfect in ur paintings ( which is actually not so important -- it is the emotion )

Genna

I did exactly that and i've never looked back.

The first thing I painted was some ring wraiths from Lord of the Rings. Ha! Easy I thought to myself. Only took me a day.

I submitted the pic to:

and boy was I gutted when they rejected it. In the end it took me a year of revisions and practice to get it good enough to be accepted by them. But it was worth every minute.

The real trick is to get the basics under your belt first. Sure you can skip a few stages but sooner or later you have to come back and learn your perspective, anatomy, colour theory, all that stuff.

But you've got to balance that with keeping your interest up. Get the motivation up and there's no limits.

Dusty

Six years ago I decided I wanted to understand the creation process of abstract painting, so I started taking abstract classes. My representational landscapes and figures started to improve, decidely through a new ability and freedom to lay down paint. I would encourage your transition from realism to fantasy.
